The click of a backspace key

     He sat at his computer, staring at the screen, at the blank message box for the answer he had yet to give.

     "I love you." No…no, can't say that. You're not supposed to know. The click of a backspace key.

     "I'll always be there for you." No. To corny, you might think I'm getting attached. The click of a backspace key.

     "Don't waste your time with her! I'm right here!" I wish I could say that, but I wish even more you would see yourself. Now you've sent me a message wondering what's wrong, why I haven't replied.

     "I'm thinking about you, that's all." He laughs quietly to himself. I'm a friend, nothing more. The click of a backspace key.

     "Go for it! I can tell you love her very much , it's adorable." There. That's something that a best friend would say, isn't it? Look, you sent me a message back saying 'thanks, you're a great friend.' I cry, because even that little bit makes me happy. You won't last long with her, she's not interested. It's too bad I can't put my feelings into words that you might understand.
